Source of Capital Grant Funding

The grant funding is provided from two sources:

  • The Australian Government
  • NSW Government.

The funding is considered wholistically in the allocation of funds in each application round.

Australian Government

Each year, the Australian Government provides advice to each block grant authority on the initial grant allocations for the upcoming calendar year, as well as forecast allocations for two subsequent years. Grant allocations are available to each block grant authority for the distribution of funds in the relevant application year.

The distribution of grants to the non-government school sector is based upon legislative guidelines in the Australian Education Act (2013). The Australian Government calculates the grant allocations based on:

  • proportional recurrent allocations (60%)
  • capacity to contribute
  • proportion of student enrolments (40%) in each education jurisdiction.

Projects recommended to the Australian Government are required to be submitted by 30 September each year. All available funding in the upcoming year is required to be allocated.

Since 1987, the Australian Government has provided $953.7M of capital grant funding. The Australian Government has also provided funding for other targeted capital grant programs:

  • Building the Education Revolution
  • Trade Training Centres in Schools
  • Digital Education Revolution.

New South Wales Government

Under the New South Wales Education Act (1990), the NSW Government provides funding to each non-government education sector in NSW. Each block grant authority is advised of the amount of funding available.

The distribution of the non-government school sector funding is based upon the proportion of students in Catholic and other non-government sectors.

Projects recommended to the NSW Government are required to be submitted by:

  • 30 September (main round)
  • 31 March (supplementary round).

The CBGA is required to reserve sufficient funds to address applications to be considered as part of the supplementary round.

We strive to expedite payment claims submitted by schools and diocesan authorities within the designated offer year. However, due to the necessity of managing cash flow in relation to total commitments against available funds, there may be instances where payments for claims submitted early in the year are processed later in the year.

Since 2011, the NSW Government has provided $403.1M of capital grant funding.
